The Megacolon:  The Mütter Museum,  Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

The Mega Colon, or Giant Colon, is one of the more curious specimens on display at a museum of curious specimens.  It is considered one of the institution’s icons.  The condition, Hirschsprung’s Disease, occurs when the nerve supply to a portion of the colon fails to develop, resulting in chronic constipation and over-development of the colon.  The original owner of the Megacolon was an unfortunate young man who was shaped like a very large pear.  The exhibit case was specially designed to display the Megacolon in all of its exceptional curiosity, and just below it, a wax model of a normal colon for visitors to digest comparisons of the two.
